More iPhone 2.0 gossip

03/06/2008

The leaks, predictions and gossip surrounding the Apple iPhone are reaching fever pitch ahead of the expected announcements on June 9th 2008.

Cult of Mac report that the new iPhone 2.0 will have the following new features - I've added a little explanation next to each feature:

  • 3G - almost a given - this will mean you can browse the web and download emails or use Google Maps and much higher speeds in areas with decent 3G coverage (mainly major towns and cities)
  • GPS - This is the technology that dedicated SatNav systems such as TomTom use for highly accurate map based navigation whilst on the move.
  • 16GB and 32GB of memory - in line with the current iPod Touch options
  • 22% thinner - I find this a little hard to believe as the number of components has increased considerably to add the features above
  • Better battery life - again, I am suspicious that this will be true.  3G and GPS are much more battery hungry than the previous iPhone's build.  I would expect Apple to have to add a bigger battery - but this conflicts with the 22% thinner claim.

The other big claim yesterday was the price would be $200 in the US - which would be the equivalent of £100 in the UK, or more likely £150 once you add the usual 'pay more just because you're in the UK' tax.

Another rumour I heard a while ago from an industry friend was that there may be an iPhone Nano launching this year.  Perhaps this is a slimmed down, multi-coloured version of the current iPhone with the 3G version acting as a flagship?  It's only a matter of time before the range branches out - like the iPod range - into sub-categories.

That's enough speculation for now.
